Equity by design is an approach to addressing differences in experiences and moving towards meaningful, systems-level change in our schools. In this session, we will explore the principles of Equity by Design as a lens in day to day practice and in solving community challenges. As a part of this session, be ready to share an equity challenge that is impacting your community.
You will leave with both a framework and an initial set of tools to practice Equity by Design principles in your school community’s context to uncover and solve DEI challenges.
Workshop Description
As our school communities grapple with social, cultural, and political divides, the ability to engage in meaningful dialogue across lines of difference is central and even more critical to equity change efforts. In this session, we will explore foundational principles for effective and meaningful dialogue, techniques and tools to transform discussions or debates into spaces of connection, empathy, and understanding, and strategies to restore dialogue when it goes “off the rails”. Leave with some ideas on ways to create safe and brave spaces for students and adults across lines of difference to connect, come together, and hopefully work towards a more equitable future.
