The IBDP Insider: A Student Support Practitioner’s Guide to Decoding and Reducing Student Stress

In high-pressure IBDP (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme) environments, student support practitioners are the primary safeguard for student well-being. However, without a map of the IBDP's structural requirements, they often lack the institutional leverage to address the root causes of student distress. This course moves practitioners from reactive support to program-informed intervention, providing the technical literacy needed to navigate the IBDP machinery, influence school-wide assessment procedures, and ultimately protect student mental health.

Intended Audience

International School Student Support Practitioners (Counselors, Psychologists, and Curriculum Specialists) supporting Grades 11–12 in IBDP schools.

SE:A1:13 (Social-Emotional Domain): Signs of stress and techniques for reducing stress.

• Grade 9-12 Outcome: Identify personal stressors, recognize the signs of stress in self and others, and select strategies to prevent or manage stressful situations.

A:A2:2 (Academic Domain): Time-management skills to use time productively and accomplish tasks by deadlines.

• Grade 9-12 Outcome: Make choices about how to allocate time by prioritizing tasks according to importance and urgency, and integrate assignment deadlines into their schedule.

Essential Questions

1. How can practitioners move from general empathy to program-informed intervention using IBDP technical literacy?
2. In what ways can "Coordinator-to-Coordinator" advocacy influence school-wide assessment procedures to protect student wellness?

Participants will have knowledge about:

1. The impact of the "24-point hurdle" and "The Core" (EE/TOK/CAS) on student burnout.
2. Basic program literacy of the Diploma Programme (DP), including its structural requirements, assessment philosophy, and core components (EE/TOK/CAS).
3. Strategies to demystify complex IB jargon through an "IB-to-English" glossary to facilitate clearer communication with students and families.
4. The phenomenon of "Structural Convergence" and how overlapping deadlines drive student distress.
5. IB Access & Inclusion policies for securing accommodations as a standard right.

Participants will be able to:

1. Construct a "Stress Heat Map" to identify when students move from "stressed" to "at-risk".
2. Develop an "IB-to-English" glossary to simplify complex jargon for students and parents.
3. Utilize specific "Advocacy Scripts" to request assessment adjustments from leadership or faculty.
4. Coach students on "Strategic Pathway Decisions" regarding the Full Diploma versus Course Certificate.

Emily J. Thomas

Emily J. Thomas is a Literacy Strategist with Erin Kent Consulting (EKC) and an active member of the IB Educator Network (IBEN), serving as an MYP Workshop Leader and DP Literature A Examiner. She is the Founder of Playground Pedagogy, an independent consultancy, and Teaching Matters Yoga, which supports yoga studios and professionals to enhance teaching and learning. Emily brings deep "insider" expertise to school development, specializing in MYP and IBDP programme development, leadership capacity building, and system-level coherence.

A former MYP Coordinator in international schools in Korea and Thailand, Emily leverages her experience in programme implementation and assessment to help student support practitioners demystify the IBDP. Her work focuses on de-escalating academic anxiety through human-centered, design-forward approaches to curriculum. Emily also manages Drift Yoga, a pop-up studio, in Bangkok and writes the Substack Elsewhere, Examined.
