In this workshop I will share why storytelling and metaphors are such powerful teaching tools in teaching SEL skills, and I will share techniques for creating new stories. I will share a few of my best stories and metaphors that have effectively communicated complex SEL concepts to elementary-aged students and open the discussion for others to share stories or complexities that we as a group could brainstorm a metaphor or story to help them in their practice. By exchanging their most effective stories, participants may inspire each other and expand their toolkit for teaching SEL. This collaboration aims to foster a community of practice that enriches the participants’ approaches to educating and supporting their students.
This workshop will offer a guide on designing and facilitating effective group counseling sessions in elementary schools, aimed at fostering Social Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies aligned with the ISCA Student Standards. Counselors will learn how to strategically recruit students and engage parents through clear communication and transparent sharing of reports and feedback. The session will cover methods to determine the types of groups to run, tailored to meet the developmental needs of young learners and how to successfully run various small groups simultaneously.
