In times of crisis, school counselors and mental health professionals are often called upon to provide immediate support to students, staff, and families while also managing their own emotional responses. In this session, Dr. Scott Poland will share practical guidance for responding to tragic events within school communities.
Participants will learn strategies for supporting students and staff experiencing grief following traumatic events, understand the Crisis Debriefing Model, and explore effective approaches to crisis intervention in school settings. Drawing from decades of experience supporting schools during critical incidents, Dr. Poland will offer concrete tips and frameworks that counselors and school leaders can apply immediately.
This session will equip participants with practical tools to respond with care, clarity, and confidence when their communities face crisis. This session will be available online via PheedLoop for participants unable to attend the conference in person.
About this Speaker
Dr. Scott Poland has 40+ years of experience working on crisis intervention in schools. He has assisted over thirty school communities on site after tragedies including school shootings, acts of terrorism, natural disasters and suicide clusters. He is a licensed psychologist and has authored or coauthored seven books on school crisis. He is a past president of the National Association of School Psychologists and has received many awards including the Helping Parkland Heal and the NASP Crisis Intervention Awards. He has testified about school crises before the U.S. Congress on four occasions. He previously worked full time in K-12 schools for 26 years and is currently a professor and the Director of the Suicide and Violence Prevention Office at NSU Florida.
