Different Brains Means Different Mental Health Patterns: What not to miss—and systems to address challenges proactively

Date: TBA

Time: TBA

Workshop Description

Neurodivergent students don’t just learn differently—they experience mental health differently too. Autistic, ADHD, and students with learning disabilities (LD/SLD like dyslexia/dyscalculia) have significantly higher rates of mental health difficulties than neurotypical peers, but the profiles of those difficulties differ in fairly reliable ways.

This practical, research-informed, interactive workshop builds a clear understanding of the mental health risks across various student populations. We’ll look at why anxiety, depression, sleep challenges, and OCD frequently co-occur. We’ll address suicide risk with care and clarity.

Multiple international studies (U.S., Sweden, Taiwan) indicate autistic people are significantly more likely to attempt suicide than the general population. We will dive into belonging, what that means and how we create environments that foster belonging. Safeguarding leads will leave with concrete guidance on what this means for screening, staff training, and response.

Across the session, you’ll work on case studies and collaborate in small groups to examine school systems that address and support student needs proactively.
