About this webinar
Climate change has been identified by the World Health Organization as the greatest threat to human health in the 21st century. The frequency and intensity of extreme weather events—such as wildfires, floods, and droughts—are increasing across the globe. In response, a growing number of young people are experiencing climate anxiety or climate change related anxiety, a term used to describe chronic stress, sadness, and fear about the impacts of climate change on their own lives and the future of the planet. With some studies showing that up to 75% of young people report experiencing high levels of anxiety related to climate change, the need for international schools to address this emerging mental health issue is clear. This webinar is designed to introduce international school counselors to the concept of climate anxiety, examining its psychological effects on students and implications for learning and well-being. Participants will explore common emotional responses, and learn strategies for supporting students through validation, resilience-building, and building student agency. The session will offer practical tools, real-world case examples, and resources to help counselors shape a supportive school environment where students can express their genuine concerns and still feel empowered to take constructive action.
